The road to the NBA Finals is finally upon us and it promises to be full of twists and turns along the way. This is the Lakers' chance to prove that their surplus of talent was worth all of the money it cost and that their late season breakdown, winning only four of their last eleven games, was only a fluke. With the talent of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, etc, the Lakers are hoping to be able to get on track for another three-peat reminiscent of the consecutive championships they won from 2000-2002. This is the final year that Cleveland has to get LeBron James his first championship ring and convince him to not take his talents elsewhere. The Charlotte Bobcats finally made the playoffs since joining the league as an expansion team in 2004. For many teams, a lot rides on how the playoffs unfold and who stands above the rest, victorious in the end.
In the West, the LA Lakers (57-25) have earned themselves the number one seed. They will be pitted against the Oklahoma City Thunder (50-32), who sit at the bottom of the West with the number eight seed. Despite the unanimous feelings that the Lakers should win this series, they stumbled to the regular season finish line and are looking like a team suffocating under the pressure. The Thunder have been playing well and their star player Kevin Durant, who is playing in his first playoff game, is salivating at over the chance to knock Kobe Bryant and Co. off their high horses. The Lakers led the regular season series 3-1. I predict that the Lakers will win this series in six games.
The number two and seven seeds, the Dallas Mavericks (55-27) and the San Antonio Spurs (50-32), will battle it out in the first round this year. The Mavericks, who are coming into the playoffs with the best win streak in the West, are looking good and are feeling confident. However, the Spurs have a knack for knocking off higher seeded playoff teams, which could lead to the most likely upset this year. The Mavericks led the regular season series 3-1. I predict that the Mavericks will win this series in seven games.
The third seeded Phoenix Suns (54-28) will take on the sixth seeded Portland Trailblazers (50-32). Despite a talented roster, the Trailblazers look to be outmatched by both the athleticism and scoring ability of the Suns, especially with their star player Brandon Roy out due to an injury. The Trailblazers led the regular season series 2-1. I predict that the Suns will win this series in five games.
The final game in the West will be between the fourth seeded Denver Nuggets (53-29) and the fifth seeded Utah Jazz (53-29). With both teams pretty evenly matched, this series should come down to whose stars will shine brightest: Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups of Denver or Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer of Utah. Denver led the regular season series 3-1. I predict that the Nuggets will win this series in seven games.
In the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers (61-21), led by all-star LeBron James, earned themselves the top seed and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs for the second year in a row. This will put them against the eighth seeded Chicago Bulls (41-41), who barely earned themselves a playoff spot with a win in their regular season finale. Despite their efforts to make the playoffs, they shouldn’t be much of a challenge for the dominant Cavaliers. The regular series was split, 2-2. I predict that the Cavaliers win this series in four games.
The second seeded Orlando Magic (59-23) will be matched up against the Charlotte Bobcats (44-38), a franchise that is getting its first taste of the playoffs this year. Orlando has the longest winning streak in the NBA heading into the playoffs, and shouldn’t have too much trouble dispatching a team that is just glad that its summer didn’t start as early as it usually does. The Magic led the regular season series 3-1. I predict that the Magic will win this series in five games.
The third seeded Atlanta Hawks (53-29) will face off against the sixth seeded Milwaukee Bucks (46-36). The Bucks are coming into the series looking to upset one of the hottest teams in the NBA without their best player, Andrew Bogut, who they lost to injury. Without Bogut, the Bucks will be lucky to win a single game against Josh Smith and his Hawks. The Hawks led the regular season series 2-1. I predict that Atlanta will win this series in four games.
The final game in the East will be between the fourth seeded Boston Celtics (50-32) and the fifth seeded Miami Heat (47-35). The Heat are one of the hottest teams headed in the playoffs, having won nine of their last ten, while the Celtics have only won three out of their last ten. Boston has struggled down the stretch and the Heat are looking to capitalize on their momentum. The Celtics swept the regular season series 3-0. I predict that the Heat will win this series in seven games.
As I predicted last year, I expect the Lakers to barely squeeze their way past the opposition in the West and stumble into the Finals purely due to their overwhelming amount of talent. As for the East, I again see the Cavaliers conquering everyone that stands in their way and going head-to-head with the Lakers in the Finals in one of the most highly anticipated matchups in NBA history.
Now, for you Lakers fans, brace yourself. I predict that the Cavaliers will come out victorious over the Lakers in six games. James (“The King”) will get his ring and will stay in Cleveland, which is where he belongs. Shaquille O’Neal, who hopped on the LeBron train at the beginning of this season, will taunt Kobe with his new shiny championship ring and will retire a happy man. Lakers fans will riot in the streets of LA and all will be right in the world.

Mock Draft 3.0
Here's my third try at this, after a few weeks of free agency, trades and some speculation on different draft prospects.
1. St. Louis Rams
Sam Bradford, QB- The Rams need a quarterback to rebuild around, and Bradford, as he showed at his Pro Day, can be that quarterback.
2. Detriot Lions
Ndamukong Suh, DT- Suh is a player that will drastically improve any defense he plays for, the Lions would be down-right stupid to pass him up.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Gerald McCoy, DT- Much like Suh, McCoy will be a building-block for any defense and the Bucs need an anchor on the defensive line.
4. Washington Redskins
Russell Okung, OT- In light of the trade for McNabb, the Skins must now look for an insurance policy for their new quarterback.
5. Kansas City Chiefs
Eric Berry, S- Although an offensive lineman would be ideal, a player like Berry will be hard to pass up considering his game-changing ability.
6. Seattle Seahawks
Jimmy Clausen, QB- Pete Carroll has a previous relationship with Clausen and will be looking for a building block to start his reign in Seattle.
7. Cleveland Browns
Bryan Bulaga, OT- With the quarterback position looking to be weak at the beginning of the season, what better of a way to help that then to bolster the o-line.
8. Oakland Raiders
Joe Haden, CB- The Oakland defense would love to have an outstanding player to line up across from Asomugha, and Haden could be that player.
9. Buffalo Bills
C.J. Spiller, RB- Spiller's stock continues to rise and the Bills won't be able to pass up such an electrifying player.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Derrick Morgan, DE- With the addition of Kampman, the Jags would love to have another outstanding pass rusher on the opposite side of the d-line.
11. Denver Broncos
Rolando McClain, ILB- McClain can be the leader that any defense needs to win Super Bowls, and with his help, the Broncos could get over the late season hump that kept them out of the playoffs.
12. Miami Dolphins
Dez Bryant, WR- Henne will be ecstatic when the Fins give him another weapon to work with.
13. San Francisco 49ers
Trent Williams, OT- With two first round picks, the 49ers look for the best value they can find and go with another one of the outstanding o-linemen in the draft.
14. Seattle Seahawks
Sergio Kindle, OLB- The Seahawks need help getting to the passer, and Kindle could be 2010's Brian Orakpo.
15. New York Giants
Dan Williams, DT- He's a monster inside and will help anchor this Giants defense for years to come.
16. Tennessee Titans
Kyle Wilson, CB- With some questions lingering in the secondary, the Titans take the next best cornerback off the board with Wilson to help patch some defensive holes.
17. San Francisco 49ers
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE- An athletic freak, the 49ers will add one of the most intriguing players in the draft to their roster to fortify their already solid defense.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike Iupati, G- Despite other needs, Iupati will help anchor an aging offensive line and give the running game an extra spark.
19. Atlanta Falcons
Carlos Dunlap, DE- The Falcons struggled all year to get to the quarterback, and with the addition of Dunlap, should do a much better job at it this year.
20. Houston Texans
Earl Thomas, S- Possibly the best defensive back behind Berry, Thomas will add athleticism to a team that's on the cusp of becoming playoff worthy.
21. Cincinnati Bengals
Jermaine Gresham, TE- The Bengals will add another weapon to their offense to help Palmer lead them back to the playoffs.
22. New England Patriots
Brandon Graham, OLB- This addition will help the Pats get pressure on the quarterback and make life easier on their mistake-prone secondary.
23. Green Bay Packers
Bruce Campbell, OT- They need an insurance policy for Rodgers after lack-luster pass blocking in 2009. Campbell will provide that and more.
24. Philadelphia Eagles
Patrick Robinson, CB- With the loss of Sheldon Brown, the Eagles will look to rebuild a secondary that continues to be a weak point in a playoff caliber team.
25. Baltimore Ravens
Anthony Davis, OT- The run game struggled to get going in the playoffs, and now that there is a passing game, the offensive line should be improved to help Rice and McGahee.
26. Arizona Cardinals
Golden Tate, WR- With an imminent quarterback battle and an at-times poor offensive attack, the Cards will look to add an extra spark to their offense.
27. Dallas Cowboys
Maurkice Pouncey, C- The Cowboys need some help on the o-line, and Pouncey can come in and provide immediate support.
28. San Diego Chargers
Ryan Matthews, RB- The Chargers are desperate for a complement to Sproles at this point, and Matthews appears to provide just that.
29. New York Jets
Demaryius Thomas, WR- As Sanchez continues to grow, Ryan and co. will look to add some toys for him to play with.
30. Minnesota Vikings
Taylor Mays, S- The Vikings struggled at times at stopping the passing game, and Mays has proven that he can be an extraordinary playmaker when he's on his game.
31. Indianapolis Colts
Jared Odrick, DT- The Colts defensive line struggled to stop the run all season long and adding an anchor at DT will be one step in the right direction.
32. New Orleans Saints
Sean Witherspoon, OLB- Witherspoon is an excellent fit for this defense and could fill the void left by Fujita almost immediately.

Mock Draft 2.0
After some research into players and moves by some NFL teams in the past few days, I decided to give this another go around. Also had to make sure that the draft order was correct. So here we go.
1. St. Louis Rams
Ndamukong Suh, DT- There is a solid chance that this pick could be traded considering the Rams have so many needs, but I still see them taking the best player on the board in Suh.
2. Detriot Lions
Gerald McCoy, DT- Much like the first pick, this one could be traded to fill the Lions' many needs, but one of those is DT and McCoy would be too hard to pass up.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Derrick Morgan, DE- Although Berry will definitely be considered here, the Bucs need a big time pass rusher and Morgan could give them just that.
4. Washington Redskins
Sam Bradford, QB- Jason Campbell's run in D.C. is over and new coach Mike Shanahan will be looking for the next franchise quarterback to build his team around, and his best option appears to be Bradford.
5. Kansas City Chiefs
Anthony Davis, OT- The Chiefs need an insurance policy for Cassel as well as rising star running back Jamaal Charles, which Davis will provide.
6. Seattle Seahawks
Russell Okung, OT- Even though there is a more dire need a quarterback, the Seahawks need to find their replacement for aging left tackle Walter Jones.
7. Cleveland Browns
Eric Berry, S- With so many holes and none that stand out above the rest, the Browns will look to secure a player in the mold of Ed Reed who can be a superstar.
8. Oakland Raiders
Bryan Bulaga, OT- Although the last time they picked an Iowa offensive lineman, it was somewhat of a bust, the Raiders are desperate to find someone to block for all of the offensive talent they've drafted in recent years.
9. Buffalo Bills
Bruce Campbell, OT- With the offensive line talent flying off the board, the Bills won't hesitate to take the best option remaining, especially after losing Butler unexpectedly.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Carlos Dunlap, DE- Even with Pierre-Paul still on the board, the Jags should go for the supreme pass-rushing defensive end out of Gainesville, where the Jags have a tendency to draft out of.
11. Denver Broncos
Dez Bryant- Considering that the Broncos will most likely not have Brandon Marshall back, they need a spark plug who can spread the field and make plays in the passing game, which Bryant can deliver immediately.
12. Miami Dolphins
Rolando McClain, ILB- With the likely loss of Porter along with aging linebackers, the Dolphins shouldn't hesitate to take the proven McClain here.
13. San Francisco 49ers
Joe Haden, CB- With another pick only 4 spots down the board, the 49ers will take the best player available at this point, and Haden should be an excellent addition to the 49ers already solid defense.
14. Seattle Seahawks
Jimmy Clausen, QB- With the OT position already solidified, Pete Carroll can now look towards rebuilding the Seahawks offense, starting with a new quarterback.
15. New York Giants
Brian Price, DT- The Giants defense is looking for a new anchor to hold down the front line, and Price can do exactly that.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE- The defensive line needs some help with the possible loss of Vanden Bosch, and with an outstanding defensive end like Pierre-Paul still on the board, he should be too hard to pass up.
17. San Francisco 49ers
Trent Williams, OT- The 49ers need some help blocking for Gore as well as to allow Alex Smith a chance to prove he can handle the starting role. With Williams in the mix, that should be a little easier to do.

Mike Iupati, G- With the signing of Hampton, the need for a DT isn't as big and the Steelers can look towards solidifying Big Ben's protection.
19. Atlanta Falcons
Kareem Jackson, CB- The Falcons had a tough time stopping the pass this season, and will Jackson's help, might be closer to crossing that threshold into the playoffs.
20. Houston Texans
C.J. Spiller, RB- It will be a miracle for Spiller to get this far into the draft, but the Texans need a running back bad and he will be too hard to pass up.
21. Cincinnati Bengals

Dan Williams, DT- Williams is a steal at this point in the draft, and will help improve one of the Cardinals' biggest needs: the defensive line.
27. Dallas Cowboys
Earl Thomas, S- Thomas is a proven play maker who could immediate upgrade the athleticism of the Cowboys defense.
28. San Diego Chargers
Jahvid Best, RB- If they don't trade up in an attempt to secure Spiller, the Chargers will have to go for the next best option with Best, considering that they most likely won't have Tomlinson or Sproles going into the draft.
29. New York Jets
Golden Tate, WR- The Jets had a hard time finding a play making at the receiver spot this season that could catch big throws in the clutch, and Tate can do just that by giving Sanchez a big-time playmaker to throw to.
30. Minnesota Vikings
Jared Odrick, DT- Even with an outstanding defensive line, the Vikings need to find an eventual replacement for Pat Williams, and Odrick has done a good job of showing that he's NFL-ready.
31. Indianapolis Colts
Brandon Spikes, ILB- Although somewhat of a stretch, Spikes has shown glimpes of excellence and the Colts will need to find a replacement if they can't find a way to resign Brackett.
32. New Orleans Saints
Sean Witherspoon, OLB- An obvious fit for the Saints' defense, he should be able to come in and give immediate help to middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Taylor Mays, S- The Eagles are desperate to find the replacement to Brian Dawkins, and Mays' potential would make any team drool at this point in the draft.
25. Baltimore Ravens
Arrelious Benn, WR- Unless they bring in T.O., which is unlikely, they will still need some electric receivers to help out Joe Flacco and the Ravens' offense.
26. Arizona Cardinals
Dan Williams, DT- Williams is a steal at this point in the draft, and will help improve one of the Cardinals' biggest needs: the defensive line.
27. Dallas Cowboys
Earl Thomas, S- Thomas is a proven play maker who could immediate upgrade the athleticism of the Cowboys defense.
28. San Diego Chargers
Jahvid Best, RB- If they don't trade up in an attempt to secure Spiller, the Chargers will have to go for the next best option with Best, considering that they most likely won't have Tomlinson or Sproles going into the draft.
29. New York Jets
Golden Tate, WR- The Jets had a hard time finding a play making at the receiver spot this season that could catch big throws in the clutch, and Tate can do just that by giving Sanchez a big-time playmaker to throw to.
30. Minnesota Vikings
Jared Odrick, DT- Even with an outstanding defensive line, the Vikings need to find an eventual replacement for Pat Williams, and Odrick has done a good job of showing that he's NFL-ready.
31. Indianapolis Colts
Brandon Spikes, ILB- Although somewhat of a stretch, Spikes has shown glimpes of excellence and the Colts will need to find a replacement if they can't find a way to resign Brackett.
32. New Orleans Saints
Sean Witherspoon, OLB- An obvious fit for the Saints' defense, he should be able to come in and give immediate help to middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
So there you go, again. Another maybe coming once it gets closer to draft day.
Saying Goodbye to Veteran RBs Becoming a Trend
First LaDainian Tomlinson and Jamal Lewis... Then Brian Westbrook... Now Thomas Jones. Who will be next to fall in the line of veteran running backs whos teams simply don't want to pay for their services anymore?
Maybe Ricky Williams or Clinton Portis will be getting the boot next. It seems that the NFL is evolving rapidly at the running back position. More and more, you see teams that have solid seasons from first and second year backs, which eliminates the need for these high-paid veterans to stay on payroll. There are so many talented running backs in the league that can get the job done, that more and more seasoned veterans are losing their jobs or becoming role players who are used to mentor these young players.
Take the New York Jets for example. This season, Thomas Jones ran for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns. His backup, third round draft pick Shonn Greene, amassed 540 yards during the regular season and became a crucial part of the Jets' playoff run. Now that they have come to the conclusion that Greene can handle the load offensively, there's no need to pay a veteran like Jones, who still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
Of course, most of these players will find jobs, they will get their chances to prove they still have some play-making ability, and will probably play out the remainder of their NFL careers with a different team. But in the business that is the NFL, times are-a-changing.

Mock Draft 1.0
As the 2010 NFL draft (April 22-24) draws nearer, there continues to be more and more speculation as to who will go where in this years draft. So, before the combine is over and players fall and rise based on their 40 yard dash times, I'm going to give my idea as to who each team will take with their respective picks.
1. St. Louis Rams
Ndamukong Suh, DT- With a team that needs help at basically every position except running back, the Rams will take the best possible player on the board.
2. Detroit Lions
Gerald McCoy, DT- In just about the same position as the Rams, they'll take the best player on the board in a draft dominated by outstanding linemen.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Derrick Morgan, DE- The Bucs are looking for a dominant defensive lineman to anchor a rebuilding defense, and Morgan should do a solid job of that.
4. Washington Redskins
Sam Bradford, QB- With Jason Campbell's run in D.C. just about over, the Skins are looking to find a new franchise quarterback and Bradford seems to be the best option.
5. Kansas City Chiefs
Russell Okong, OT- Branden Albert has been inconsistent at best, so look for the Chiefs to give Matt Cassell better blocking by drafting one of the valuable tackles with their early pick.
6. Seattle Seahawks
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE- In an attempt to bolster a weak pass rush led by 33-year-old Patrick Kerney, the Seahawks go for a proven force at defensive end.
7. Cleveland Browns
Joe Haden, CB- The Florida star will add immediately help in a defensive backfield that struggled to keep offenses out of the endzone all year.
8. Oakland Raiders
Anthony Davis, OT- It will be nearly impossible to give any quarterback a chance to run the Raiders' offense with Mario Henderson starting at tackle. Immediate upgrade with Davis.
9. Buffalo Bills
Bruce Campbell, OT- With the sudden lose of Brad Butler to the world of politics, the Bills will be looking to solidify the tackle position.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Brandon Graham, DE/OLB- Although it might be a little early for Graham to come off the board, this hybrid player can become a playmaker if given the time and opportunity.
11. Denver Broncos
Dez Bryant, WR- Following the likelihood that Brandon Marshall leaves, Bryant looks to be the best option at taking over the #1 receiver spot and could be the spark the Broncos offense needs.
12. Miami Dolphins
Rolando McClain, ILB- Even with a somewhat weak ILB class, the Dolphins are desperate and will take the best player available at the position, McClain.
13. San Francisco 49ers
Eric Berry, S- Considering they have a second pick only a few picks later, they take the best player on the board, Berry, who will be surprised to make it this far down without getting picked.
14. Seattle Seahawks
Jimmy Clausen, QB- Even though a OT would be tempting, Carroll needs a QB to build his team around and should go with Clausen with his second pick of the round.
15. New York Giants
Brian Price, DT- Not the ideal position for Price, the G-Men need a DT desperately and will take the best available at this point.
16. San Francisco 49ers
Bryan Bulaga, OT- With numerous questions at the tackle position, the niners will solidify the offensive line and take the big Iowa boy with their second pick.
17. Tennessee Titans
Kyle Wilson, CB- With no outstanding DE talent still on the board, the Titans will strenghten their secondary with an excellent cover man in Wilson.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers
Dan Williams, DT- Nose tackle is a pressing need for the Steelers, and Williams should be able to fill that void relatively quickly.
19. Atlanta Falcons
Carlos Dunlap, DE- The Falcons had one of the lowest sack totals and will look to upgrade their defensive line with Dunlap.
20. Houston Texans
Earl Thomas, CB/S- With the lose of Dunta Robinson a big possibility, look for the Texans to draft some secondary insurance with a promising player in Thomas.
21. Cincinnati Bengals
Jermaine Gresham, TE- Adding an extra offensive weapon will help give Carson Palmer another way to air the ball out and allow the Bengals another run at the playoffs.
22. New England Patriots
Sergio Kindle, OLB- A solid pass rushing linebacker who will allow the Pats to depend on someone other than Tully Banta-Cain to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
23. Green Bay Packers
Trent Williams, OT- With an offensive line that struggled to give quarterback Aaron Rodgers time to throw, adding a player like Williams will give the O-line and Rodgers some confidence.
24. Philadelphia Eagles
Everson Griffen, DE- Trent Cole did an outstanding job at getting to the quarterback this year, and will do even better in 2010 with another good pass rusher on the other side of the line.

Mardy Gilyard, WR- Unless the Ravens make some blockbuster move to pick up a #1 receiver, Gilyard has proven that he can be a dangerous receiver, something Joe Flacco desperately needs.

LT Hits the Market
Sad, yet somewhat understandable news today for San Diego Charger fans as running back LaDainian Tomlinson was released before the March 5th deadline at which time the team would have had to pay LT $2 million in roster bonuses.
LT, who has spent all nine years of his illustrius NFL career on the Chargers, has struggled in recent years, ending this past season with a weak 3.3 yards per carry and only 730 yards on the ground. As age continues to become more and more of a factor for Tomlinson, the Chargers have decided that it was time to part ways with the player who ranks 8th on the all-time rushing yards list. Holding or sharing almost 30 Charger rushing records, he leaves the Chargers as their career rushing yards leader.
There are a few teams on the lookout for a solid running back this off-season, with those teams being the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Redskins. A real option could be the Texans, who were a playoff caliber team that lost close games this season due to the lack of a strong, consistent running game.
Although his heart lies with San Diego and the Chargers, LT looks to have a few more years worth of gas in the tank. So whoever picks him up could have a quality running back or at least a strong backup who can help develope younger running backs.

#1 QB in 2010 draft? Not Bradford or Clausen...
There have been many ideas as to who should be considered the best, most NFL-ready quarterback in this year's draft. Most experts and analyists would boil it down to 2 prospects: either Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen.
But in my opinion, no other quarterback stands out more for me than the one that no one expects to make an impact: Tim Tebow.
Sure, he stands out in COLLEGE football history because he ran for tons of touchdowns. Sure, he doesn't have the greatest arm in the world. Sure, he only won the Heisman in his sophomore year (a first by the way). He tore defenses apart during his run as Florida's quarterback. And when the passing lanes weren't open, he made defensive backs look slow and linebackers look like they were still in Pop Warner. Now it may not be that easy when he finally hits the NFL considering the speed and tackling ability of defensive players, but the type of player he is will allow him to elevate his level of play whenever his opposition becomes stronger. He is an outstanding player with all the physical tools as well as the mental ones to become a key component to any team's offense. In my opinion, he should be a top 10 pick. That, unfortunately, most likely will not happen due to many critics peeception that he is unproven as a throwing quarterback.
Others may argue that his display in the Senior Bowl is a bad sign, but I doubt there is a single player in the history of the NFL that has never had a poor game. Tebow will show up at the combine ready to provide a much better idea of the amazing potential that he holds as a quarterback than was shown at the Senior Bowl.
His work ethic is exceptional, shown by his dedication to becoming more comfortable taking snaps unders center before the Senior Bowl. He will work on any facet of his game that needs it and should become a starting quarterback in the NFL within three years.

Who Dat Gunna Win the Super Bowl?
The biggest sporting event of the year... The Super Bowl. It's finally upon us, and it looks to be quite a shoot out between to powerhouse offenses.
Super Bowl XLIV will match up the 14-2 Indianapolis Colts and the 13-3 New Orleans Saints.
The Colts, who have been dominant throughout the playoffs, are looking to bring home their second Lombardi Trophy in four years. With the help of quarterback Peyton Manning, the Colts have had little trouble scoring against opposing teams all year long. So far during the playoffs, they have put up 50 points, and with both teams today possessing high-flying passing attacks, that number could double before the game is over. Manning has plenty of options to throw to, from wide receivers Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, and Austin Collie, to tight end Dallas Clark. Running back Joseph Addai should also be a big factor today as the defense will be doing its best to keep Manning and the rest of his passing attack under wraps. If the Colts can get the running game going and keep the Saints defense honest, the Colts should have an easy time putting points on the board. The biggest question mark for either team is the Colts' defense, which has been questionable from time to time this season. Manning has had seven fourth quarter comebacks this season, which were a result of a defense that has had some trouble keeping its opposition out of the endzone consistently. Another huge factor today will be the questionable status of All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney. He tore a ligament in his ankle during the Conference Championship game against the New York Jets, and has had trouble getting back onto the practice field. Although it is a rather serious injury, it shouldn't keep Freeney from seeing the field today. The question is whether he will be effective or not. If he isn't, backup Raheem Brock could be a much more favorable matchup for the Saints. This game will come down to whether Manning can pick apart this Saints defense and if the offensive line can keep the heavy Saints pass rush off of his back.
The Saints, who barely edged out the Minnesota Vikings to find their way into the Super Bowl, are coming into this game with a chip on their shoulders. This is going to be their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, coming only a few years after a devastating hurricane riped apart New Orleans. The city has rallied behind its team, and this would be a huge moral boost for NO and all of Louisiana. Quarterback Drew Brees has been the spark behind this Saints offense that was ranked #1 during the regular season. They scored the most points during the season and are hoping that their high scoring offense can kick in this week as well as they go against another high scoring offense. Brees has plenty of options to go to on offense, which has helped him be so successful this season, earning the Fedex Air Player of the Year. With receivers such as Marques Colston and Devery Henderon, along with tight end Jeremy Shockey and running back Reggie Bush, the passing attack could be a huge problem for the Colts today. With a trio of outstanding running backs in Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Bush, the Saints are hoping that their offense can be two-dimensional, which will give them an edge over a somewhat one-dimensional Colts offense. Getting Reggie Bush involved in the offense and putting the ball in his hands will be a huge factor in moving the ball against a quick Colts defense. Even with so many questions surrounding the offensive line and whether they can slow down the Colts' extremely quick defense, the Saints are confident that they can handle the pass rush and allow Brees plenty of time to throw. They kept two great pass rushing defenses, the Cardinals and the Vikings, to only one sack this post-season. The defense for the Saints has been solid all season, led by middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma and safety Darren Sharper. The defensive line has done a great job of putting pressure on quarterbacks, especially two weeks ago against Brett Favre of the Vikings. Sharper will do everything in his power to lift his defense up and try to make plays against this outstanding passing attack of the Colts.
The Saints have done a good job of forcing turnovers this year, and whether they can force Manning into turnovers will be a key factor in today's game. With both teams possessing offenses capable of scoring early and often, this game should turn into a shoot out. The team that does the best job of not becoming one dimensional and forcing turnovers will win the Super Bowl and take home the Lombardi Trophy. Even though the Colts have the "been-there, done that" factor on their side, the Saints have the emotional side of this that could give them the edge.

Manning has had seven fourth quarter comebacks this season, which were a result of a defense that has had some trouble keeping its opposition out of the endzone consistently. Another huge factor today will be the questionable status of All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney. He tore a ligament in his ankle during the Conference Championship game against the New York Jets, and has had trouble getting back onto the practice field. Although it is a rather serious injury, it shouldn't keep Freeney from seeing the field today. The question is whether he will be effective or not. If he isn't, backup Raheem Brock could be a much more favorable matchup for the Saints. This game will come down to whether Manning can pick apart this Saints defense and if the offensive line can keep the heavy Saints pass rush off of his back.
The Saints, who barely edged out the Minnesota Vikings to find their way into the Super Bowl, are coming into this game with a chip on their shoulders. This is going to be their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, coming only a few years after a devastating hurricane riped apart New Orleans. The city has rallied behind its team, and this would be a huge moral boost for NO and all of Louisiana. Quarterback Drew Brees has been the spark behind this Saints offense that was ranked #1 during the regular season. They scored the most points during the season and are hoping that their high scoring offense can kick in this week as well as they go against another high scoring offense. Brees has plenty of options to go to on offense, which has helped him be so successful this season, earning the Fedex Air Player of the Year. With receivers such as Marques Colston and Devery Henderon, along with tight end Jeremy Shockey and running back Reggie Bush, the passing attack could be a huge problem for the Colts today. With a trio of outstanding running backs in Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Bush, the Saints are hoping that their offense can be two-dimensional, which will give them an edge over a somewhat one-dimensional Colts offense. Getting Reggie Bush involved in the offense and putting the ball in his hands will be a huge factor in moving the ball against a quick Colts defense. Even with so many questions surrounding the offensive line and whether they can slow down the Colts' extremely quick defense, the Saints are confident that they can handle the pass rush and allow Brees plenty of time to throw. They kept two great pass rushing defenses, the Cardinals and the Vikings, to only one sack this post-season. The defense for the Saints has been solid all season, led by middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma and safety Darren Sharper. The defensive line has done a great job of putting pressure on quarterbacks, especially two weeks ago against Brett Favre of the Vikings. Sharper will do everything in his power to lift his defense up and try to make plays against this outstanding passing attack of the Colts.
The Saints have done a good job of forcing turnovers this year, and whether they can force Manning into turnovers will be a key factor in today's game. With both teams possessing offenses capable of scoring early and often, this game should turn into a shoot out. The team that does the best job of not becoming one dimensional and forcing turnovers will win the Super Bowl and take home the Lombardi Trophy. Even though the Colts have the "been-there, done that" factor on their side, the Saints have the emotional side of this that could give them the edge.

After Disappointing End to Season, Will Favre Finally Hang Up His Cleats for Good?
Brad Childress set out this past offseason on a mission to bring ex-Falcon/Packer/Jet quarterback Brett Favre to Minnesota to help guide his Vikings to the playoffs. For the last few years, the Vikings had all the pieces that were necessary to make a run at the playoffs, except for a quarterback.
In 2006, they drafted Alabama State quarterback Tavaris Jackson in hopes that he could take the reins as the Vikings new quarterback. 3 Seasons later, they decided that enough was enough with Jackson, who in his first 3 seasons threw for almost as many interceptions as he did touchdowns, leading him to a QB rating of 76.5. After multiple benchings of Jackson as well as additions of veteran quarterbacks such as Sage Rosenfels and Gus Frerotte, the Vikings knew that they didn't have much longer before their chance at the playoffs slipped out of their grasp. So Childress went after two-time retiree Favre who had just ended a disappointing season with the New York Jets.
After much indecision and talks of Favre not wanting to come back, Favre eventually joined the Vikings, coming in late to training camp yet having the starting job from day 1. Facing an onslaught of criticism, Favre took to work with the Vikings, getting them ready for what was hoped would be their last ditch effort to reach the Super Bowl.
Even with all the scrutiny and controversy involving Favre and Childress' "heated arguments" during a couple of games, Favre took the field this past season with poise and confidence. The end result was probably his best season of his Hall-of-Fame career. He led the Vikings to a 12-4 regular season record, threw for over 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns, while only throwing a career-low 7 interceptions. It was an outstanding season that was full of promise going into the playoffs.

NFL Conference Playoff Games 1/24
It's almost here. Two more games and we'll know who will be in Super Bowl XLIV. After a long season full of surprises and let downs, it all comes down to this weekend for four teams that have fought all season long in hopes of booking themselves a trip to Miami to play in the Super Bowl.
The first game this Sunday will be between the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts, at Lucas Oil Stadium at 3 EST. These two teams met in week 16 of the regular season, with the Jets coming away with a 29-15 victory. This can be a deceiving result though, as the Colts pulled their starters in the second half, which is believed to have led to the loss.
The New York Jets, who ended the season with a 9-7 record, have taken the playoffs by storm. Coming in as the #5 seed in the AFC, they witheld against the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round. Riding their momentum, they took on the favorites to the win the Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers, and came out of Qualcomm Stadium with a 17-14 win. Now they head into Indy this weekend with hopes of coming out on top for a third week in a row and proving that the first win against the Colts was no fluke. With an outstanding running game that has seen rookie Shonn Greene run for 263 yards in two playoff games, whether the Jets can run the ball against a somewhat inconsistent Colts' rush defense may make the difference in this game. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has proven that he can handle the pressure of the playoffs, coming out of the last 2 games with a passer rating of 92.2. Along with a terrific defense led by outstanding middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma and shutdown cornerback Darelle Revis, the Jets are looking unstoppable after holding a powerful Charger offense to only 14 points. The Jets must depend on their throw-back style offense as well as their solid running game with Greene and veteran running back Thomas Jones if they hope to pave their way to the Super Bowl.
The Colts, who ended the season with a 14-2 record, are looking to fend off a promising Jets team that seems determined to fulfill their head coaches predictions of a Super Bowl appearance. After a dominating performance against the Baltimore Ravens last week, the Colts are hoping to silence any critics and continue their success against the red-hot Jets. The Jets biggest threat towards the Colts is their running game, which the Colts proved they could stop, holding the electric Ravens running back Ray Rice to only 67 yards. The Colts kept the Ravens' offense out of the endzone all day, holding them to only 3 points. They will have to have the same type of game against the Jets, as well as force Sanchez to make mistakes. Quarterback Peyton Manning will have his hands full with trying to pass against a Jets defense that has harrassed offenses all year long. Look for Manning to try to get the passing game going early and strike quick so that they don't have to test their luck against Revis and fellow cornerback Lito Sheppard all day. The running game has been inconsistent at best all season for the Colts, so the Jets will be coming with pressure to force Manning into making tough throws and turning the ball over.
This game will come down to whether the Colts defense of last week can show up and whether Revis and the Jets D can keep Manning contained. However, the experience and leadership of a veteran like Peyton Manning along with the speedy Indy defense, the Colts should be able to step up and send the Jets packing.

The Minnesota Vikings, who ended the season with a 12-4 record, are coming off a phenomenal game in which they trounced the favored Dallas Cowboys, holding them to a single field goal while putting up 34 of their own points. The Vikings who have faced criticism for resurrecting the career of two time retiree quarterback Brett Favre. Although he was thought to have been done after a disappointing season with the Jets last season, he came back and has led the Vikings into the playoffs with the #2 seed in the NFC as well as the #2 passing attack in the league. The main factor in this game should, however, be the Vikings defense that kept the Cowboys high-powered offense to 248 yards. They kept the pressure on Tony Romo all game, sacking him 6 times and forcing 3 turnovers. Ray Edwards, who had 3 of those 6 sacks, is questionable for Sunday's game, but defensive end Jared Allen and the Williams Wall can easily pick up the slack if Edwards isn't available. The defensive backfield will be the biggest concern, as the Saints have a plethora of offensive weapons that they can utilize against a vulnerable secondary. The deciding factor of the game will be the production of running back Adrian Peterson, who has been inconsistent all year. If he came come out and play like the AP from years-past, it will take pressure off Favre and keep the Vikings from being one-dimensional.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who helped make the Saints the #1 passing team in the NFL, has had a sensational year and hopes to continue his success against a dominant Minnesota defense. He will need the help of his offensive line to keep the likes of Allen, Edwards, and the Williams Wall off his back. Saturday 1/16 Divisional Playoff Games
As the playoffs head into their second week, there are a lot of question marks about what will happen in this week's games. With both of the lower seeds winning in the AFC, while both higher seeds took the victory in the NFC, seeding seems to be a small factor in deciding who will win this weekend's bouts.
The first game on Saturday will be between the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals at the Louisiana Superdome, at 4:15 EST. These two teams did not meet during the 2009 regular season.
The Saints, who ended the season with a 13-3 record, have come under heavy scrutiny after starting the season 13-0 yet losing the last 3 games. Almost losing their chance at securing home-field advantage, the Saints sputtered into the playoffs. Led by Pro-Bowl quarterback Drew Brees, the Saints ended the season with the most points scored, leading them to have the #1 ranked offense in the league. Also aiding their offense is a bevy of talented runningbacks including Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, Reggie Bush, as well as Deuce McAllister, who was just acquired after being released from the Saints last February. As for the defense, which is led by Pro-Bowl safety Darren Sharper and underappreciated linebacker Jonathan Vilma, they are faced with the tremendous task of slowing down a Cardinal offense that put up 531 yards against an outstanding Packer defense last week. And with the abscence of defensive end Charles Grant, the Saints D will have an even larger problem with putting pressure on Card's quarterback Kurt Warner, who is unstoppable when he is allowed time to throw in the pocket. The Cardinals, who ended the season with a 11-5 record, surprised the major of the football nation last week by coming away with an exciting overtime victory over the favored Green Bay Packers. Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald have led this team all season long, helping them garner the NFC West and a spot in the playoffs. Warner had an outstanding game last week against the Packers in which he only missed 4 of 33 passes, throwing for 379 yards and 5 touchdowns. Receivers Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston, and Early Doucet all had at least 6 receptions and a touchdown, which helped lead the Cards to a 51-45 victory. Rookie runningback Beanie Wells also had a solid game, running for 91 yards and keeping the pass rush at bay. The defense, however, were X-factor in the victory, as they forced 3 turnovers, including two in the first two Packer offensive possessions. They forced 5 sacks against Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which will be a huge factor in stopping Brees and the Saints offense. If defensive end Darnell Dockett and the rest of the line can keep pressure on the Saints and they can force turnovers, the Saints will be in for a battle.
This game will come down to whether the 13-0 Saints or the 0-3 Saints show up. Either way, this should be a close game that will come down to the fourth quarter to decide the winner. The offensive talent and secondary talent of the Saints should give them the edge over the Cardinals.

Ravens running back Ray Rice, who has really come on as one of the premier running backs in the league in his second season, has been the spark plug for the Ravens offense. With the help of fellow running back Willis McGahee, the Ravens pilled up 234 rushing yards. However, quarterback Joe Flacco had a subpar performance, including only 4 completions out of 10 passes and an interception. The defense did an outstanding job of keeping NFL Comeback Player of the Year Tom Brady contained, holding him and the offense under 200 total yards. Ray Lewis and the pass rush did a sensational job of keeping the pressure on and forcing mistakes, including 3 interceptions and a fumble recovery. Forcing turnovers will be a key to success against the dominate Colts offense. The game will come down to whether they can keep pressure on Peyton Manning, who has the potential to tear the defense apart. The Ravens team as a whole did an outstanding job of dashing the hopes of a tough team that has played its best football during the playoffs in the past. With an outstanding defense and a scary running game, the Ravens will be a handful for the Colts come Saturday.

The Colts' main issue will be on the defensive side of the ball. They have had plenty of games during the season in which they won by the skin of their teeth, mostly by the talent of the offense. The defense has struggled all year to stop the run, ending the season as the #24 rush defense. If they are unable to slow up Rice and McGahee, it could be a long day for the Colts. The defense will need to get pressure on Flacco and keep them from throwing the ball with the help of defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, which will allow the defense to focus on stopping the Ravens running game.
With two high power offenses, the Colts and their passing game and the Ravens and their running game, the game will come down to which defense can handle the other team's offense. The Ravens have played well against the passing game, while the Colts have struggled against the run this year. With this in mind, the Ravens should be able to pull off a huge upset against the team with the best record in the league.

As for the defense, which is led by Pro-Bowl safety Darren Sharper and underappreciated linebacker Jonathan Vilma, they are faced with the tremendous task of slowing down a Cardinal offense that put up 531 yards against an outstanding Packer defense last week. And with the abscence of defensive end Charles Grant, the Saints D will have an even larger problem with putting pressure on Card's quarterback Kurt Warner, who is unstoppable when he is allowed time to throw in the pocket. The Saints offense has the firepower to overcome the Arizona defense, but whether they move onto the conference finals will come down to whether the defense can step up can step up and shut down Warner and the Cardinal offense.
The Cardinals, who ended the season with a 11-5 record, surprised the major of the football nation last week by coming away with an exciting overtime victory over the favored Green Bay Packers. Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald have led this team all season long, helping them garner the NFC West and a spot in the playoffs. Warner had an outstanding game last week against the Packers in which he only missed 4 of 33 passes, throwing for 379 yards and 5 touchdowns. Receivers Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston, and Early Doucet all had at least 6 receptions and a touchdown, which helped lead the Cards to a 51-45 victory. Rookie runningback Beanie Wells also had a solid game, running for 91 yards and keeping the pass rush at bay. The defense, however, were X-factor in the victory, as they forced 3 turnovers, including two in the first two Packer offensive possessions. They forced 5 sacks against Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which will be a huge factor in stopping Brees and the Saints offense. If defensive end Darnell Dockett and the rest of the line can keep pressure on the Saints and they can force turnovers, the Saints will be in for a battle.
This game will come down to whether the 13-0 Saints or the 0-3 Saints show up. Either way, this should be a close game that will come down to the fourth quarter to decide the winner. The offensive talent and secondary talent of the Saints should give them the edge over the Cardinals.
My pick: New Orleans Saints
The second game on Saturday will see the Baltimore Ravens playing the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, at 8:15 EST. The two teams met in Baltimore earlier on in the season, in a game which the Colts outlasted the Ravens by way of a red zone interception within the last few minutes of the game.
The Ravens, who ended the season with a 9-7 record, come into this game pumped up and ready to run all over the Colts after a 33-14 trouncing of the New England Patriots. Ravens running back Ray Rice, who has really come on as one of the premier running backs in the league in his second season, has been the spark plug for the Ravens offense. With the help of fellow running back Willis McGahee, the Ravens pilled up 234 rushing yards. However, quarterback Joe Flacco had a subpar performance, including only 4 completions out of 10 passes and an interception. The defense did an outstanding job of keeping NFL Comeback Player of the Year Tom Brady contained, holding him and the offense under 200 total yards. Ray Lewis and the pass rush did a sensational job of keeping the pressure on and forcing mistakes, including 3 interceptions and a fumble recovery. Forcing turnovers will be a key to success against the dominate Colts offense. The game will come down to whether they can keep pressure on Peyton Manning, who has the potential to tear the defense apart. The Ravens team as a whole did an outstanding job of dashing the hopes of a tough team that has played its best football during the playoffs in the past. With an outstanding defense and a scary running game, the Ravens will be a handful for the Colts come Saturday.
The Colts, who ended the season with a 14-2 record, are coming into the game as a team that has nothing to gain and everything to lose. They blew their chance at history when they decided to pull their starters and ruin their chances of ending the season undefeated. They ended the season on a 30-7 stomping by the Buffalo Bills. Their quarterback, NFL MVP Peyton Manning, is a handfull for any defense, but with a young, emotional group of receivers and an average running game, the offense is going to have a tough time against a tough, hard-hitting Ravens defense. If running back Joseph Addai can get into a rhythm and Manning can connect consistently with receiver Reggie Wayne, the Colts should have no problem putting points on the board. The Colts' main issue will be on the defensive side of the ball. They have had plenty of games during the season in which they won by the skin of their teeth, mostly by the talent of the offense. The defense has struggled all year to stop the run, ending the season as the #24 rush defense. If they are unable to slow up Rice and McGahee, it could be a long day for the Colts. The defense will need to get pressure on Flacco and keep them from throwing the ball with the help of defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, which will allow the defense to focus on stopping the Ravens running game.
With two high power offenses, the Colts and their passing game and the Ravens and their running game, the game will come down to which defense can handle the other team's offense. The Ravens have played well against the passing game, while the Colts have struggled against the run this year. With this in mind, the Ravens should be able to pull off a huge upset against the team with the best record in the league.

Carroll bails to Seattle as USC sinks
According to NFL insiders, USC head coach Pete Carroll has agreed in principle to a contract to become the head coach and team president of the Seattle Seahawks one day after the Seahawks fired their head coach Jim Mora.
Although the Seahawks are unable to officially sign a contract with Carroll until they satisfy the Rooney Rule, which they should do by today when they interview Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, they are expected to announce their new head coach in a couple days.
This comes after the first season in 8 years in which Carroll's USC football team did not receive a bid to a BCS bowl game. After being on top of the national football world for years, the 2009 season marked the downfall of the USC dynasty in which they fell to 9-4 and #24 in the nation after ending in the top #10 for years. This was the first time in years in which they fell out of the Pac-10 race with a couple weeks left in the season.
This season also marked the first time in years that Carroll didn't go against his USC junior players opting to head to the NFL. It seems like quite a coincidence now that he himself is headed for the NFL to a team that possesses two 1st round picks in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Jim Mora fired as Seahawk head coach
According to sources close to the Seattle Seahawks organization, head coach Jim Mora, who just finished his first year as head coach, was fired this morning. This just two days after he stated that he considered it his civic duty to bring the Seattle Seahawks their first Super Bowl win.
After being groomed for two years while the Seahawks awaited the eventual departure of Mike Holmgren, Mora took over last season as the head coach. After a disappointing season that ended in a 5-11 record with a team that had the talent to make the playoffs, Mora's philosophies and strategies started to come into question. Although it seemed a little skeptical to let him go after a rough first season that fell apart largely due to the numerous injuries that plagued the Seahawks.
The organization must now take to finding a GM, which should happen in the next day or two before they will begin to search for a head coach to take Mora's place. This new GM coming in may be a significant reason for him being fired. First reports indicate that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier or University of Southern California head coach Pete Carroll may be tagets for the head coaching spot.

Mangini will still be a Brown
After two days of meetings with new team president Mike Holmgren, it was decided that Eric Mangini would stay on as the Browns' head coach for another year. It was also decided that he will be allowed to keep all of his staff.
After starting the season 1-11, he pulled together to bring his team to a 5-11 record with a four game winning streak to end the season. Coming to the Browns for the 2009 season after three years with the New York Jets, Mangini struggled all year to bring success to Cleveland. His four game winning streak, which was the longest since 1994 for the Browns, helped resirrect his chances of continuing his coaching stint.
It was expected that with a new president, Mangini would be fired and a new coach that had similar philosophies to those of Holmgren would be brought in to replace him.

One of the main components to their four game win streak to end the season was the outstanding play of wide receiver/quarterback/kick returner/punt returner Joshua Cribbs.
Cribbs broke the record for career kick returns for touchdowns with 8. And he's only in his fifth year in the league. He had 6 of their 25 touchdowns and was a spark all season long. It's as simple as that... Gerhart deserved the Heisman.
In the closest race in Heisman Trophy history, Alabama running back Mark Ingram inched out Stanford running back Toby Gerhart by a mere 28 points.
The Crimson Tide's ball carrier had an outstanding sophomore year in which he ran for 1,542 yards, 15 touchdowns, and had an excellent 6.2 yards per carry. He led a great Alabama team to an undefeated season, including a 32-13 smothering of Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators to clinch their spot in the National Championship against the Texas Longhorns. Although Ingram had a Heisman-type season, he had a couple games in which he was inconsistent and lacked the explosion that he showed in other games throughout the season. In the Iron Bowl against the Auburn Tigers, Ingram carried the ball 16 times for a total of 30 yards, averaging 1.9 yards per carry. With his average of 6.2 yards per carry on the season, 1.9 was a major disappointment. He had another let down against the Razorbacks of Arkansas, a game in which he ran for a measly 50 yards on 17 carries. Overall, he turned in a tremendous season that most would consider Heisman-worthy.
Stanford's standout running back, Toby Gerhart, had an amazing senior season that helped resirrect a Cardinal team that hadn't been to a bowl game since 2001. He ran for 1,871 yards, 27 touchdowns, and averaged 5.5 yards per carry and led Stanford to an 8-5 overall record. Although his stats were partially inflated due to the fact that Stanford depended on him to be their playmaker, he rose to the challenge and delivered. He never ran for less than 82 yards in a game and there was only one game in which he did not score a touchdown. In the "Big Game" against the rival Cal Golden Bears, he ran for four touchdowns on only 20 carries. Against their other rival Notre Dame, he ran for three more touchdowns and threw for another. He was a key component in games which the often overlooked Stanford Cardinal demolished at that time #9 USC and beat at that time #8 and future PAC-10 Champions, the Oregon Ducks. Overall, he had more of a standout season than Ingram did.
Gerhart rose to the occasion and helped shed light on a team that many considered unnoteworthy. And just as a little cherry to add to the top of that Heisman-deserving sundae that was Toby Gerhart; He was an extremely gifted student... AT STANFORD!
Now taking into accountant that Gerhart's stats were inflated, they both had Heisman quality seasons. But the fact that Gerhart helped bring Stanford into the Top 25 as well as rewrote the Stanford record books for rushing yards and touchdowns should have given him the edge over Ingram. The sad truth is that the reason Ingram won the Heisman is not because he was necessary a better running back(Toby Gerhart won the 2009 Doak Walker award, given to the best running back in the nation), but it was because he played for an SEC team, while Gerhart played for Stanford.
Although he doesn't walk away empty handed since he did win the Doak Walker award and was named a consensus All-American, it appears as though too many voters simply go about picking the best player from the dominant teams rather than the best player in the nation. If I remember correctly, the Heisman Trophy is meant for the best player in the nation. Not the best player between the teams that are playing in a BCS bowl.
Maybe some day voters will stop drooling over all of these SEC and Big-12 teams and give the credit where it's deserved.

Sunday 1/10 NFL Playoff Games
The first of two games this Sunday will be between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots at Gilette Stadium at 1 PM EST. They met early on in the season on October 4th in a game in which the Patriots outlasted the Ravens 27-21.
The Patriots, who ended the season with a 10-6 record, have had a tough time down the stretch this season. They were 3-3 in their last 6 games, with two of those three wins coming against two teams that aren't even in the playoffs. With defensive tackle Vince Wilfork questionable for the game and star wide receiver Wes Welker out for the rest of the season, Tom Brady, the comback player of the year, and his Patriots will have to find new ways to slow down and score against the Ravens who are ecstatic just to be here. With the media and fans bearing down on Coach Bill Belichick this season after numerous questionable calls and bad decisions, the Patriots need a win to keep their strong following and position as one of the top teams in the league. Their #3 offense will be hoping to find a spark against a historically relentless Ravens defense.

Their offense is led by second-year quarterback Joe Flacco and Pro-Bowl running back Ray Rice, who has had a breakout season for the Ravens this year. Flacco has gone through a bit of a sophomore slump, but has still had a decent year. Rice has been the key to success for the Ravens, along with fellow running back Willis McGahee, who helped the Ravens become 5th in the league in rushing. And although they are facing the 3rd ranked offense in the league, middle linebacker Ray Lewis and Co. have battled their way to becoming the 3rd ranked defense in the league, which could be the critical against an injury plagued Patriots offense.
This game will come down to whether the Patriots can stop Rice and McGahee, and keep Flacco from connecting with Rice and veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason and making big plays down the field. The Patriots don't stand a chance if they can't find a successful gameplan that doesn't involve Welker.

Their offense has been one-dimensional all season, lacking a solid running game, with their leading running back only amassing 793 yards on the year. The passing game, however, has been the way that they have kept themselves in games this year. Quarterback Kurt Warner continues to prove that 40-year olds can still be professional quarterbacks and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has helped him along the way. The defense has been inconsistent and most of their wins have come from being in possibly the weakest division in the NFL. They have the best chance of blowing it in the first week of the playoffs.

Their #2 defense is led by former Heisman Trophy winning cornerback Charles Woodson as well as an outstanding group of linebackers. And with the #1 rushing defense, they can put their focus on shutting down Warner and Fitzgerald.
Unless the Packers have a mental lapse, their outstanding offense and dominating defense should be able to overwhelm a Cardinals team that has stuggled to count on anything other than their passing game to notch wins this season. The only chance the Cardinals seem to have is hoping the Packers are overwhelmed by the temperature change between Arizona and Green Bay, but then again, the Cards home field is a dome. Unless the Packers have a mental lapse, their outstanding offense and dominating defense should be able to overwhelm a Cardinals team that has stuggled to count on anything other than their passing game to notch wins this season. The only chance the Cardinals seem to have is hoping the Packers are overwhelmed by the temperature change between Arizona and Green Bay, but then again, the Cards home field is a dome. There goes that idea...

Saturday 1/9 NFL Playoff Games
So after 4 weeks of preseason games, 17 weeks of regular season games, a couple of head coaches being fired, and tons of drama, the playoffs have finally rolled around. And frankly, I couldn't be more excited!
With so much tension and what-ifs going into the final week of the season with about half of the AFC still trying to sneak their way into the playoffs and 4 teams battling for a first-round bye in the NFC, the playoff picture is finally set and the playoffs are upon us.
This upcoming Saturday, the first game will pit the New York Jets against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium at 4:30 PM EST. The game will be a rematch of the final week of the season, in which the Jets smashed the Bengals in a 37-0 blowout.
The Bengals, who ended the season with a 10-6 record, are coming off a rough last four games. Their only win during that stretch was against the 4-12 Kansas City Chiefs, in which they took the lead on a Chad Ochocinco touchdown with two minutes remaining in the game. The two of those three loses during that stretch were games in which the Bengals played totally demoralized football and lacked the firepower that is needed to compete in the NFL playoffs. Even with a winning record, the Bengals were almost even in the amount of points given up compared to points scored.
The Jets, who ended the season with a 9-7 record, are coming into the playoffs with a much stronger end to their season, winning 5 of their last 6 games, including ending the Indianapolis Colts' run at going undefeated. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has had an up-and-down season in which he's thrown 20 interceptions, but only 12 touchdowns. His lack of strong play has been aided by the #1 rushing attack in the league, led by Thomas Jones who finished the season third in the league in rushing with 1,402 yards. The Jets also ended with the #1 total defense in the league, which gives them a huge advantage against the Bengals offense, which was ranked a lousy #24 after their season finale.
After last week's shellacking, the Jets are hoping for some deja-vu as the visit the Bengals. Even with home-field advantage on their side this time around, the Bengals will have to produce some huge plays on offense if they hope to stand a chance of advancing to the AFC Divisional Playoffs. Their best hope is putting pressure on Sanchez early and often to keep the playoff pressure on a rookie quarterback who has struggled at times this season.

The second game on Saturday will be between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, at Cowboys Stadium at 8 PM EST. Like the Jets-Bengals matchup, this game will be a rematch of the final week of the regular season, which also involved one team shutting out the other team. The Cowboys left Lincoln Memorial Field with a 24-0 victory over the Eagles.
The Cowboys, who ended the season with an 11-5 record, had one of their best December performances in Tomy Romo history, losing only one game to the red-hot San Diego Chargers in their last seven games, including two games in which they shut out their opponent. The #2 offense has become a nag for opposing defenses, as the offensive line consistently gives quarterback Romo plenty of time find receivers like newcomer Miles Austin and star tight end Jason Witten. If Romo and the Cowboys can keep their December success going through the new-year, the Cowboys may just be one of the toughest teams to beat in the NFC.

Those chances were spoiled when they took the field against the Cowboys, who kept Donovan McNabb, DeSean Jackson, and the Eagle offense out of the endzone all night. This, however, was not completely due to the talent of the Cowboys, but instead due to the lack of concentration as the Eagles were plagued by dropped passes and inaccurate throws all night long. With a defense that has started seven different players at middle-linebacker, the Eagles are going to need a great defensive showing as well as a little luck to hold off the Cowboys.
This game will come down to whether star players for each team show up to play. DeSean Jackson, who has been a game-breaker all season, contributed little offensively during the Eagles loss last week. They will need him to step up to pull off a win.
